This Is only a personal view and I may be completely wrong, but please, If you're having problems playing this game online, first try loading with "1. Options 2 - 6 are all obsolete sound hardware & drivers, so I'm pretty sure that our PC or other hardware gets 'locked up' because they're searching for these non-existent drivers. For what It's worth, I think It's the sound options which are causing the problem. Whenever the opening options give you a numbered choice, choose No.1.that's all there Is to It! It means, of course, that you have to play without sounds but, on a game of this type, It really makes no difference! (I normally listen to my fave music through my headphones when playing these kind of games, anyway, as I'm sure most retro-gamers do!). The solution will appear a bit strange, I can understand that - but It solves the problem! Trust this old git! The screen showed C:\CIV, and It wouldn't accept any input, so I was left with a useless DOS screen. For me, the game kept reverting to a DOS screen before It was fully loaded. Never mind that their UU, the Wingedwinged Hussar, is one of the strongest cavalry units in the game there is, but Poland’s ULA is where this nation really takes the cake. I had problems at first and If you are having them too, this may help. Like it or not, Poland is probably the best all around, win-in-any-situation, civilization in the game. Works perfectly well when I play online through my PC.
